Every Day is a Chance to be Better

Throughout this global pandemic, I personally have used my downtime as a perfect time to look and examine how I think and really feel. Life was so fast paced Pre-Covid19 and it is important to look and reflect at the things that make us happy and more importantly the things that get in the way of that happiness.

Life is all about the little details and the most joy is often found in our most ordinary of moments. In a culture where we chase the extraordinary and in the perfectionist fast paced society in which we live, we can easily miss out on these moments. Brene Brown famously mentions “Joy comes to us in moments—ordinary moments. We risk missing out on joy when we get too busy chasing down the extraordinary.”

Throughout these restrictive times small gestures can mean so much more than one grand gesture. Simple pleasures throughout the day can be far more gratifying then that one amazing weekend. When you connect the dots between all these little joys, life seems fuller and more satisfying. Whether that is a cup of tea, that walk, that Netflix series or a new recipe, games nights with the family, life’s pleasures are in the small everyday things.

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Robert Brault

Often in our culture people attempt to live their lives backwards. They try to have more things, or more money in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. Margaret Young states that ‘‘You must first be who you really are, then do what you really need to do, in order to have what you want’’.

Throughout these latest restrictions as we spend more time in our homes, ask yourself what gives you the most joy? What small things can you do everyday to be the best version of you? It is not a life or death question but exploring this dynamically impacts our quality of life and mental health greatly.

Some key daily habits you can start today;

  • Smile. You tend to smile when you’re happy.
  • Exercise. Exercise isn’t just for your body- It benefits every aspect of your mental health- Your thoughts, feelings and emotions.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Keep and set routines
  • Eat with mood in mind and be mindful of being at home and what we are putting into our bodies.
  • Be mindful of our alcohol intake
  • Be grateful and practice gratitude.
  • Be Kind.
  • Breathe deeply.
  • Acknowledge the unhappy moments.
  • Talk to someone about how we are feeling.

Remember every day is a chance to be better!

It is in the small everyday things and in life’s most ordinary of moments that we discover our most joy. Discover and invest in you for a more wholehearted way of life.
