Tough Mudder is the top endurance event series in the world which values camaraderie throughout the course, designing obstacles that encourage group participation. Founded by friends, Will Dean & Guy Livingstone, since launching in 2010, over 4 million people have participated in Tough Mudder events across the globe.
The focus of Tough Mudder is to promote teamwork. Participants are not timed and instead work together as a unit while undertaking a physical and social activity. It offers entrants a rare opportunity to participate in a fun environment with work colleagues, friends or families. It helps groups overcome fresh challenges and poses questions of a team’s mental and physical strength.
Loughcrew Adventure Centre, Oldcastle, Co. Meath was once again the setting for Tough Mudder Ireland 2019. The event this year took place between July 20th and 21st. As DeCare Dental Insurance Ireland are an official sponsor of the event, some of our “toughest” employees decided to once again group together and take part in the event. All money raised by the competing employees went to DeCare Dental’s 2019 charity partner, the Irish Red Cross/Claremorris Red Cross.
Team DeCare through caution to the wind and decided to take part in the “Tough Mudder Classic”. The TM classic is the full, energy sapping 8/10 mile course, featuring 25 different obstacles that play on common human fears including water, electricity and heights. The group faced their fears, working together to navigate their way through a variety of obstacles and hazards that were certainly not for the faint-hearted! The appropriately named ‘Arctic Enema’, ‘Everest’, ‘Block-ness Monster’ and the newly added 45 ft. climbing wall were only a glimpse into what our DeCare Tough Mudders had to endure. The team also had to encounter the newly located and extra muddy, DeCare Dental sponsored “Kiss of Mud” obstacle. The sense of camaraderie and achievement were the over-riding emotions of Team DeCare after completing the course, with the majority of the 2019 team taking part for the second year running. Some say “you do it once, you catch the bug”.
The organizers of Tough Mudder do admit that the course is a challenging event, however very achievable if you work as a team. For friends and colleagues who don’t fancy the full route, there is the “Tough Mudder 5KM” which is just under half the distance. The course features some signature Tough Mudder obstacles including Kiss of Mud, Everest and Block-ness Monster, however, they do not include any obstacles that include ice or electric shocks.
This event offers the opportunity to interact with various corporate groups. Companies are now putting a much higher emphasis on corporate wellness for their staff and non-competitive team-based events like Tough Mudder are ideal ways to encourage staff to keep healthy while having fun.
