World Health Day 2021 takes place on Wednesday, April 7th 2021. The theme for this year’s day is building a fairer, healthier world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have highlighted that our world is an unequal one. As COVID-19 has highlighted, some people are able to live healthier lives and have better access to health services than others. This is due to the conditions in which they are born, grow, live, work and age. Throughout the world, some do struggle to make ends meet which in turn, leads to unnecessary suffering, avoidable illness and premature death, as well as harming our economy and society.

You may read this and think ‘that is very unfair’, yes, that is correct. The WHO also believe that this is preventable. They are calling on world leaders to take responsibility to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions that are conducive to good health. Covid-19 has undoubtedly affected everyone worldwide, but its impact has been worse so on those communities who were already vulnerable, exposed to diseases and less likely to have access to good quality health care.

Remember to brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste (aged 2+). Don’t take a break from brushing your teeth, even for a single day.

What steps can I take for better, overall health?

  1. Take care of your body and mind
  2. Stay active
  3. Take care of your mental health
  4. Practice good sleeping habits
  5. Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  6. Monitor your alcohol intake and avoid smoking and drug taking

When it comes to taking steps for better health, we know it’s not always easy. Everyone has their own approach and is on their own unique personal health journey.

There are also steps we can take to keep our mind in the best shape:

  • Get Outside – exposure to daylight is very good for you. Our brain’s love to be in the sunlight and it helps regulate our sleep cycles properly.
  • Try Something New – Is there something you wished you had done back at the start of the pandemic? Start/complete a project, take up a new hobby etc.. Why not use this time wisely, bite the bullet and set a goal for yourself?
  • Exercise – It instantly boosts your mood and can make a huge, vital difference to your day.
  • Sleep – Sleep is vital. It is vital for our mood and a lack of it can have a huge affect on anxiety and depression symptoms.
