Tooth pain can strike at any time, often when you least expect it. Whether it’s a dull ache or sharp, throbbing discomfort, managing tooth pain until you can get to a dentist is crucial. Here are 7 tips, from our experts, to help relieve tooth pain temporarily and protect your oral health.

Rinse with Warm Salt Water

A warm saltwater rinse is a natural disinfectant and helps reduce inflammation. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds. Repeat several times a day for relief.

Use over-the-counter Pain Killers

Ibuprofen or paracetamol can reduce pain and inflammation. Follow the dosage instructions carefully, and avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, which can cause tissue irritation.

Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek can help numb the area and reduce swelling. Use for 15-20 minutes at a time, with a break in between.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Stay away from very hot, cold, sugary, or acidic foods and drinks that may worsen the pain. Stick to soft, neutral-temperature foods until you see your dentist.

Keep the Area Clean

Gently floss around the sore tooth to remove any trapped food particles. Avoid aggressive brushing but maintain oral hygiene to prevent infection.

Use Clove Oil for Natural Relief

Clove oil contains eugenol, a natural anaesthetic. Apply a small amount with a cotton ball directly to the sore area. It can temporarily numb the pain and reduce inflammation.

Elevate your Head

If tooth pain worsens at night, try sleeping with your head elevated. Lying flat can increase blood flow to the affected area, intensifying pain.

These tips are temporary measures. Persistent or severe tooth pain could indicate a more serious issue, such as an infection, abscess, or decay. Always schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
