With the arrival of summer, the days are getting warmer and the sun is gracing us with longer hours of daylight. It’s the perfect time of year to invest in a new pair of shades. But did you know that sunglasses, whether prescription or non-prescription, are not only a fashion statement but also a crucial tool to safeguard your eyes year-round?

Regardless of the season or weather conditions, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can have a significant impact on your vision and eye health. Let’s explore some of the serious eye conditions that can be caused by UV radiation:

Cataracts

Repeated exposure of your eyes to the sun can lead to cataracts, a condition that clouds the lenses in your eyes, impairing your vision.

Macular Degeneration

Prolonged exposure to UV rays increases the risk of macular degeneration, a genetic disease that affects the central part of the retina, leading to vision loss.

Photokeratitis

This eye condition, often referred to as a “sunburn of the eye,” can occur when your eyes are exposed to a large amount of UV rays in a short period. Activities like sunbathing, skiing on snowy slopes or spending time near reflective surfaces like water or sand can put you at risk.

Skin Cancer Around the Eyes

The delicate skin surrounding your eyelids is prone to damage from UV rays, potentially leading to skin cancer.

To shield your eyes from these risks, make sure to grab your sunglasses every time you step outside. Remember, it’s essential for the whole family to have the right sunglasses – even children and teens. In fact, kids can receive up to 80% of their lifetime sun exposure before turning 20.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to schedule your annual eye exam to ensure you’re receiving the best possible protection for your eyes. Additionally, here are a few sun-friendly tips to maintain healthy eyes and skin when you venture outdoors:

  • Wear a hat with a three-inch brim and tightly woven fabric to shield your face and the top of your head from the sun’s rays.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+ ) that is safe for your face and eyes. Apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
  • Don’t be fooled by clouds. Even on overcast days, more than 90% of UV rays can penetrate light cloud cover, so it’s crucial to protect your eyes.
  • Seek shade whenever possible, particularly during the sun’s peak intensity, which is typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Enjoy the summer while keeping your eyes safe and stylish with the perfect pair of sunglasses.
