There is no need to be concerned at this increased tendency for your gums to bleed when you are pregnant. It is caused by fluctuating hormone levels in your blood that are a normal part of pregnancy. It causes your gums to become more sensitive to the presence of plaque bacterial biofilm. The gums become inflamed more easily, leading to redness, swelling and bleeding when you brush. Continue cleaning and brushing your teeth and gums as best you can and use dental floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque in between your teeth. Use a mouthwash only if advised by your dentist and use a toothpaste with 1450 ppm (parts per million) of fluoride. Visit your dentist and hygienist as this is a good time to have your teeth checked and cleaned. You will also learn how to recognise dental plaque and improve your oral hygiene technique. Remember, continue with your brushing and your gums will return to normal after your baby is born.
