Small Habits that Protect your Sight

Healthy Vision Month is the perfect reminder that caring for your eyes is about more than just seeing clearly. Regular eye care can support overall wellbeing, improve productivity, and even help detect hidden health conditions early. Eye tests may reveal early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol before symptoms appear.

Why Eye Health Matters

Our eyes work constantly, whether we are driving, reading, scrolling on phones, or working on laptops. Prolonged screen use can contribute to digital eye strain, causing symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and fatigue. Digital eye strain has become increasingly common due to extended device use. Poor eye health can affect concentration, mental wellbeing, and daily quality of life.

Check-In – How Health are your Eyes?

Let’s take a minute. Count how many of these habits you already practice.

Vision Wellness Checklist

  1. I take screen breaks every 20 minutes.
  2. I wear sunglasses with UV protection.
  3. I eat foods rich in vitamins A, C and E.
  4. I schedule regular eye tests.
  5. I blink regularly during screen use.
  6. I limit screen brightness at night.
  7. I stay physically active.
  8. I know my family history of eye disease.

Your Score

6-8 checks: Your eye care habits are strong.

3-5 checks: A few small changes could improve long-term vision health.

0-2 checks: Your eyes may benefit from more daily protection and regular tests.

Foods that Support Healthy Vision

Nutrients such as lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, and vitamin A may help support retinal health and reduce oxidative stress. Incorporating foods like carrots, leafy greens, eggs, citrus fruits, fish rich in omega-3s and whole grains may help support healthy ageing and reduce the risk of age-related eye conditions.

The 20-20-20 Rule

One of the simplest ways to reduce digital eye strain is the below rule. This gives your eye muscles a chance to relax and may help reduce fatigue during prolonged screen time.

“Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.”

Don’t Skip Eye Tests

Many eye conditions develop gradually without obvious symptoms. Regular eye tests can detect issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, and even broader health concerns before they become serious. Take a minute and ask yourself – when was the last time I last had an eye test? If it has been over two years, now during Health Vision Month is the perfect time to do so.

Remember, healthy vision is closely connected to healthy living. Small daily habits like balanced nutrition, screen breaks, exercise, UV protection, and regular eye tests, can make a meaningful difference over time. Prevention and early detection are key to protecting your eyesight for the future.
