The link between Oral Health and Osteoporosis.

Every year on the 20th of October, the world observes World Osteoporosis Day, an event dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to fracture. While most people associate osteoporosis with hip, spine, and wrist fractures, its effects on oral health are often overlooked.

Osteoporosis can significantly impact the jawbones, which support the teeth. When bone density decreases, the jawbone may lose volume and strength, leading to tooth loss, loose teeth, or difficulties with dentures. The condition can also complicate dental treatments, as bone healing and regeneration may be slower.

Moreover, certain medications used to manage osteoporosis, such as bisphosphonates, can occasionally cause rare but serious complications like osteonecrosis of the jaw, particularly after tooth extractions or oral surgery. This highlights the importance of communication between dentists and physicians when treating patients with osteoporosis.

“Maintaining good oral hygiene, eating a calcium and vitamin D-rich diet, avoiding smoking and attending regular dental check-ups are all vital in preserving both bone and oral health”

Early diagnosis of osteoporosis can not only protect against fractures but also support long-term dental wellbeing. This World Osteoporosis Day, let’s remember that strong bones and a healthy smile are deeply connected, taking care of one means supporting the other.
