What are they?

Do my wisdom teeth need removing? Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. For some people, they grow in without causing any problems. For others, wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth.

Are my Wisdom Teeth a problem?

Impaction

Sometimes wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to grow. They can get stuck (impacted) under the gums or grow at an angle.

Infection and Gum Issues

Partially erupted wisdom teeth can trap food and bacteria, leading to gum disease and tooth decay around the wisdom teeth and other adjacent teeth.

Jaw Pain and Cysts

Impacted wisdom teeth can sometimes cause jaw pain or develop cysts that damage surrounding bone and teeth.

When is Removal Recommended?

  • Disease free wisdom teeth should not be removed routinely.
  • Repeated gum infection around a wisdom tooth or deep dental decay in a wisdom tooth are both indications for removal.
  • Dental decay or other damage caused by wisdom teeth to neighbouring teeth is an indication for removal.
  • Gum disease spreading to neighbouring teeth due to poor oral hygiene around wisdom teeth is an indication for removal.

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but regular dental check-ups and X-rays can help you catch problems early. If your dentist recommends possible removal, discuss your options and chose the one that makes the most sense to you especially if you are having problems with infection or decay around the wisdom teeth or around neighbouring teeth.
