What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a common, mild gum disease that causes swelling of the gums. It happens when dental plaque biofilm, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up on your teeth, especially near the gums. If you don’t clean your teeth and gums properly every day, the bacteria release toxins that inflame your gums. This can make your gums swollen, tender, and prone to bleeding when you brush.

What are the signs?

Look for red, swollen gums that bleed easily, especially when you brush your teeth. Gingivitis usually doesn’t cause much pain, so it’s important to watch for these signs.

Can it be treated at home?

Yes. Brush your teeth and gums for at least two minutes daily with a soft-bristle, nylon brush. With good oral hygiene, you should see improvement in about three days and symptoms should disappear in a week.

When to visit the Dentist?

If your symptoms don’t improve with good home care, you might have more serious gum disease and should see a dentist for diagnosis and treatment.

Periodontal Disease

This is a more severe form of gum disease. It occurs when gingivitis spreads to the tissues and bones that support your teeth, causing them to erode. This can affect one area or multiple areas in your mouth. To treat periodontal disease, a dentist or hygienist will need to clean your teeth and gums professionally to reduce inflammation.
